1. Feed Regularly

Feeding your lawn twice in the spring and twice in the fall helps strengthen it to crowd out weeds and protect against heat and drought. There are Nitrogen-rich lawn foods that can be applied to any grass type and many products are kid and pet friendly when used as directed. If you want to kill dandelions and other major lawn weeds* while you feed, you can apply Weed & Feed products. *See label for listed weeds.

2. Mow High and Return Clippings

Mowing at a higher height allows the grass to grow in thick and develop a strong, deep root system. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn helps to recycle plant nutrients back into the soil.

3. Water Your Lawn

Well-fed lawns use water more efficiently than their unfed counterparts but you still need to water your lawn! When grass needs water, it will let you know by wilting or dulling in color. Try to take advantage of nature’s sprinkler instead of your own as often as possible and rely on the rain to water your lawn.

4. Repair Bare Spots

Use the Scotts® Turf Builder® EdgeGuard® DLX Broadcast Spreader to apply fertilizer, grass seed, salt, and ice melt. This lawn spreader comes pre-calibrated and ready-to-use, and holds up to 15,000 sq. ft. of Scotts® product. When EdgeGuard™ is engaged, it will block off the right-side of the spreader pattern to prevent product from spreading onto non-lawn areas. Using the Scotts® Turf Builder® EdgeGuard® DLX Broadcast Spreader is simple. To begin, turn rate control dial to the correct setting listed on the back of each Scotts® product, pour the product in the hopper, then start spreading. The spreader’s design enhancements feature a curved hopper and dual-bladed agitator for smooth product funneling and consistent coverage. Spreaders provide uniform coverage of granular products; without one, you may end up with uneven coverage of fertilizer or control products that can result in uneven feeding, weed, disease, or insect control. Scotts® spreaders can also be used to distribute salt on walkways and driveways.
